Help create an authentic audience for 8th graders to present their culminating portfolios!

8th-grade portfolio presentations are the culminating assessment of a Leading Edge Academy student's middle school academics.  Students have been working to build their portfolios and prepare their presentations for months.

Portfolio Panelists are parents, friends, high school students and community members who provide an authentic audience for student presentations.  No experience or prior knowledge is necessary.  A Leading Edge teacher provides leadership and guidance for every panel.    This is a phenomenal way for parents of future Leading Edge 8th-graders to become familiar with the portfolio process.

Please consider signing up for a minimum of 2-panel slots.  We ask that parents of the current 8th-grade students please not volunteer to be panelists.

*Field Trip Itinerary - Mini Itinerary Attached here is the itinerary for the trip (yes, there are two copies in the attachment).  It is a full three days with plays, workshops, time to explore the OSU campus, and the experience of being in the dorms.

*Packing List - A breif packing list has been included below.  Please make sure to note that students need to bring a bag lunch for the first day.  They should have appropriate clothes to wear to the plays in the evenings.  Also, rain is in the forcast for Ashland, so please pack accordingly.

*Arrival time - It is our goal to be loading busses by 8am on Wednesday, so students need to arrive between 7:45-8:00am.  We will meet the busses in the area in front of the Benvenuti theater.

*Behavioral Expectations - This week, teachers have been reviewing behavioral expectations with students.  We strongly emphasize that field trips are a privilege and that we expect Leading Edge students to leave a stunningly positive impression with whoever they interact with on a trip.  8th graders should also know that behavioral issues on this trip will put their ability to participate in the end of year 8th grade trip to Six Flags in jeopardy.  We have used THIS slide show to go over expecations and have asked students to sign-in that they understand and agree.  Please help us by reviewing these with your student one more time before the trip.

Packing List

  • Sack lunch to eat on the bus on the ride up

  • School appropriate clothing for our three day trip

  • Healthy snacks and a refillable water bottle

  • Toiletries: shampoo, bath soap, etc.

The lottery for Leading Edge Academy will be held on March 6th at 4pm. While the lottery is a public event and anyone is welcome to attend, the fastest way to view the results after the lottery is by checking your email or by logging in to your Infosnap account.

Verifying Preferences

Natomas Charter School conducts a three-step preference verification process. The first step occured during your intake meeting, the second step was completed by our office staff and the final step is an email confirmation sent out on Friday, March 2, 2018. Please check for this email and contact the office to which you applied by Monday, March 5, 2018 at 4:00 pm if you have any corrections.

Checking Lottery Results

Immediately following the lottery seated and waitlist information will be sent via email and posted in your Infosnap account. If you are offered a spot you will need to accept or decline by Friday, March 23, 2018 at 4:00 pm. This deadline is extremely important so that we can properly schedule students for next year.

If you applied to both Leading Edge and PFAA you may only choose one spot. Any offers not accepted by Friday, March 23, 2018 at 4:00 pm may be given to the next family on the waitlist.

Waitlist Process

If your student is initially placed on the waitlist in 6th grade please continue to check for updates. For the first few weeks after the lottery, there will likely be significant movement on the waitlist as families accept or decline spots. Whenever you would like updated waitlist information you can login to your Infosnap account. The system will also send an email whenever there is a change in your status. As soon as a spot becomes available the system will email you. Waitlist information will not be posted on our website or shared over the phone.

Need Additional Help?

The best way to access the most up-to-date information regarding your student’s lottery results or waitlist placement is to log-in to your Infosnap account.  If you are having trouble logging in please use the “Forgot Password” link. We do not have access to your login or password information. If you have any additional questions please contact the academy to which you applied.

The Student Services/Counseling Center has found that anxiety is a topic that many of our students experience. This is a common experience for many in our community in 2018. To address this need and to raise awareness about the topic, we have set this as the topic for our January Parent University. We have identified a film that focuses on this topic and are excited to have viewing opportunities for both parents and students.

“Angst” is a film that discusses the growing issue of stress, anxiety, and depression in teenagers from a student, professional, and parent perspective.  It asks the question of what it looks like, and what is being done to address it, across the country.  Here is a link to a preview for the film. (https://angstmovie.com/about/).

A Parent University focusing on this topic is being held on Saturday, January 27, 2018 at 8:30 AM.  There will be a screening of the film, a panel discussion, and breakout sessions.  Families must RSVP for this event at the link below.  Space is limited.

à RSVP for the parent university HERE (https://docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1FAIpQLSekMmfTuvqf4WzvXWZQthYIoic-hDzFFIaYfZgjl7xYvn2K1Q/viewform)

We are excited to announce that we will be holding an optional screening of the documentary “Angst” for our Leading Edge students.  The screening will be followed by a 30 minute debrief and discussion session led by our counseling team.  The goals for of showing this film to students are to increase awareness of anxiety, give students resources for when they themselves feel anxiety, and assist students in the development of healthy coping skills.

This screening will be held, Wednesday, January 31, 2018 at 8am.  Students who attend the screening will be excused from the first 25 minutes of production/first period.  They will be sent to class by 9:45. Parents must RSVP for their students to attend this showing at the link below.  Please note, Leading Edge students can only attend the Wednesday showing.

Greeting NCS Families!

We love to bring our NCS community together to show that #WeAreNCS.  This year, we are welcoming all NCS families to NCS Night at the theatre for...

A Christmas Carol - December 1, 2017 at 7:00 PM

Mark your calendars and bring the whole family to enjoy this Holiday Extravaganza. Every arts department at PFAA is collaborating on creating a fresh, modern look at the beloved holiday classic, A Christmas Carol by Charles Dickens. In our version Ben Scrooge is 18 years old and he is the youngest and richest teen in the world. Ben and his late, best friend, Jake Marley invented a wildly popular and excessively violent video game app called “Stoopid People.” Ben, who has isolated himself from anyone who cares about him, keeps his wealth to himself and refuses to help those in need.

Set in San Francisco in 2020, Ben is visited by Jake’s ghost and three (very original) spirits who help him discover the joys of kindness and love for his fellow human beings. This joyous, musical journey is perfect for the whole family and it’s guaranteed to leave you filled with holiday happiness.

Dear 8th-graders and 8th-grade families

This is the first of a series of emails you will get from me over the next few months as we help prepare you to transition to high school.  We at Leading Edge will do our best to support you in the process of applying and choosing a high school.  However, please note that we are able to manage this process on an individual student level.  Keeping your eyes out for these emails and follow up on suggested action items quickly is your best way to ensure that you are on track.

Shadow Days

At high school night last week, all of the schools invited student to come visit.  We are able to organize visits to some schools in order to smooth the process and limit the impact of many students being absent from class.  We will be organizing 2 shadow days at Inderkum on Thursday, November 16th and Tuesday, January 16th, and supporting student to attend preview day at PFAA on Tuesday, January 30th.

Inderkum shadow day are limited to 1 visit per student and max out at 30 students.  Students will be asked to fill out a google form in class this week expressing their preferences regarding.  They will be able to see the IB and CECA programs (or both).  Parents, please discuss your preferences with your student tonight so that they are prepared to fill out the google form in class this week.

Transcripts and Reports

Many schools request packets of information on students, including transcripts and test scores.  Our office staff will be mailing home a copy of this information for all 8th graders with report cards on November 17th.  Please keep track of this original and use it to make copies for your various application.  Assembling this information is high labor intensive for our staff.  If you do lose these originals, we will ask you to come in to the office in person for a replacement.

Letters of Recommendation

Some of the high school programs ask for teacher or principal recommendations.  Our staff is happy to complete these for your student.  Please request your recommendation at least 2 weeks before it is due.

Natomas Charter High Schools

Leading Edge is just one step in the Natomas Charter School journey.  We hope that students will consider staying in the family and attending PFAA of VLA high school programs.  Please remember that students will need to apply to Natomas Charter High Schools and will need to audition for PFAA.  Applications will be available on December 4th and will be due in February.  We will support students in preparing their PFAA audition.

Suggested Action Items

—> Make your list of high schools.  Put all deadlines and due dates on your calendar

—> Students - complete the High School Shadow google form

—> Parents - Scan or copy the transcript packet that is sent home on November 17th

Overnight Field Trips

We are so pleased to be able to provide the opportunity for students to attend an overnight field trip in each grade.  Sixth-grade families have already received this letter detailing the fabulous Marin Headlands adventure that the 6th grade will take in January.  Here are the links with details about the 7th grade trip to San Francisco and 8th grade trip to Ashland.

Overnight trips do come with a cost.  This year, families can choose to make payments online via myschoolbucks.com.  Simply find Natomas Charter School and limit your search to Leading Edge Academy.  Families can also submit checks made out to Natomas Charter School (not NCS).  Please be sure to include the student’s name in the memo.  (Note - My School Bucks will be up and running by mid-next week.)

For all grades, these trips are not mandatory, but we hope all students who wish to are able to attend.  We ask your help in letting us know if attending these trips represent a financial challenge.  You can submit a request for financial assistance using THIS form.  These responses are confidential and will only be seen by Ms. Goldman.

Finally, if you are interested in chaperoning for either 7th or 8th-grade trip, please submit an application via THIS google form.  Ms. Goldman will notify you if you have been selected to chaperone.

Fundraising

In early September, LEAP sponsored a Town Hall meeting for us to discuss field trips and fundraising.  Thank you to all who attended and gave great ideas.  HERE are the slides from the evening with added information about the solutions that came from that night.

The biggest change proposed at the Town Hall was to eliminate the annual See’s Candy fundraiser (it doesn’t make us much money and is difficult for all involved).  We have decided to replace this with monthly LEAP “Eat Out” nights.  These are fantastic opportunities for you to support Leading Edge and not have to cook!  Please join us for the next “Eat Out Night” by eating at Panda Express on Del Paso on November 2nd.

Lastly, several of you have asked for the “Free Yearbook” offer deadline to be extended.  These donations go to our Innovation Fund which helps us keep our teacher’s supplied with everything they need to keep on the cutting edge in their classrooms.  Plus, you get a yearbook!  See the FLYER for more information.  We will extend the deadline through December 15th.

This information was emailed out on Friday, July 28th.

Schedule Pick Up for 7th and 8th graders is Monday, August 7, 11:00-12:00. - Students or parents may come to pick up their schedule in that window provided that they have completed their on-line registration and have all their vaccination information up to date.  Please note, only a small number of students do NOT have complete registrations or vaccine information.  Our office has emailed if you do not have all your information up to date (so if you haven't heard from us, you are probably good to go).

Orientation and Schedule Pick Up for 6th grade students and families is Tuesday, August 8, 12:30-3:15.  This is a very important event for all 6th graders and hugely helpful for families as well.  Students and parents will be participating in separate orientations.  Both start promptly at 12:30, so feel free to arrive a few minutes early.  We will meet in the amphitheater area of campus.  Families will be able to pick up 6th grader schedules at the end of the orientation provided that they have completed their on-line registration and have all their vaccination information up to date.  Please note, only a small number of students do NOT have complete registrations or vaccine information.  Our office has emailed if you do not have all your information up to date (so if you haven't heard from us, you are probably good to go).

The first day of school is Wednesday, August 9, 9:20.  All students start at 9:20 on Wednesday.  Students who have not yet picked up their schedules will be able to do so between 8-9 at the main office.  There will be no block schedule this week so students will attend all 7 periods on Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday.

No Study Hall for the first week of school.  We will not have study hall available for students after school in the first week of school.  Students who need to remain on campus after 2:45 may do so in the Library with a pass from the Librarian.

School Supplies and Donation Information Available on Website.  Earlier this summer I posted information about school supplies and donations.  You can also see that information HERE.  Please note that there is no requirement that students arrive on the first day of school with specific supplies.

Back to School Night is August 17th.  Lastly, please save the date for Back to School Night on Thursday, August 17th, 5:30-7:15.  This is an important chance to learn about your student's teachers and classes.

Hello Leading Edge Families,

Each of the Academies at Natomas Charter School is proud of our opportunity to serve our students through offering world class learning environments.  Our ongoing goal is to nurture young minds and effectively prepare our students for the future.  Each year we ask NCS families for their response to a survey that allows us to continue to improve as a school and as individual academies.

Please follow the link below to take the Year-End Survey:

We ask that you have one member of your family complete this survey by June 7th, 2017.  Once you complete the survey, you can print the final page and turn it in with a parent hour form to earn 1 additional hour toward your family total.

Your feedback is a critical component of continuing to improve our program.  Thank you in advance for your time in completing this survey.

Dear Incoming 6th-grade families

At the math placement tests, students were given a packet with summer work.  While summer work is optional, it is highly encouraged as a way to reduce a loss of skills and content.  We have done our best to create assignments that are fun and engaging, as well as providing choice for students and families.  These assignments are the same for PFAA and LE and can be done without access to NCS tech accounts.

If your student misplaced the hard copies, links to the documents are available here:

Also in the packet was a Save-the-Date for Orientation

6th-grade parent and student orientation will be held  Tuesday, August 8th, 12:30-3:30.

We are excited to announce online Registration for the upcoming school year! This process replaces the paper forms sent home at the beginning of each school year.  On Monday, May 15th, you will receive an email from “[email protected]”  This will contain the links and instructions for completing your student’s registration.

Your registration must be completed and submitted by Sunday, May 28th, at 8 p.m.  If you require assistance completing the forms, you may visit the office during normal business hours or contact Ms Goldman to arrange another time.  If you have students in multiple programs, please note that the time line for this process is different from PFAA or VLA.

3. Math Placement Testing

We will be holding math placement tests in May.  We use this score, in conjunction with other measures, to appropriately place your students in their 6th grade math course.  Current Star Academy students will take this placement test in their 5th grade classrooms at Star Academy.  All other incoming 6th graders, will need to come to the Blackrock campus on either Tuesday, May 9th or Wednesday, May 17th, from 3:30-4:30p.m.

4. Summer Reading Support

In order to support our students in keeping their reading skills sharp over the summer, our school librarian, Mrs. Elsa, would like to invite you to the Blackrock Campus library to check out books for the summer.  These books can be used for summer reading assignments (details of which will be available at placement testing) and returned the first week of school.  The library will be open to incoming 6th graders before the math placement tests from 3:00-3:30p.m. as well as on Tuesday, June 13th and Wednesday, June 14th from 10a.m. - 2:00p.m.

5. Save the Dates

Please save the following dates:

  • Tuesday, August 8th - Sixth Grade Orientation for students and families, 12:30p.m.- 3:30p.m.

  • Wednesday, August 9th - First Day of School!

We look forward to seeing you soon.

This is a copy of the email that was sent Friday, April 28th to all currently enrolled LE families highlighting the registration and intent to disenroll process for 2017-18

Dear Leading Edge Families

We are so excited to begin preparations for the 2017-18 school year.  This email includes details about information critical to that process

If you are returning to Leading Edge next year....

1. Registration

We are excited to announce online Registration for the upcoming school year! This process replaces the paper forms sent home at the beginning of each school year.  On Monday, May 15th, you will receive an email from “[email protected]”  This will contain the links and instructions for completing your student’s registration.   (Don’t worry, we will send out a reminder closer to the date.)

If you are leaving Natomas Charter School or transferring to another academy…

1. Intent to Disenroll

While we hope that all of our students will continue with us through all of middle school, we know that sometimes life takes you in a different direction.  If your life is taking you away from Natomas Charter School or Leading Edge for the 2017-18 school year, we’d like to know.  Please let us know by completing THIS quick google form.  Completing this form will NOT disenroll you or give away your place for next year.  It will allow us to contact you for additional information.  Any students who are leaving Natomas Charter School OR transferring/promoting to a different academy, including all 8th graders, should complete this form.

As always, if you have any questions or concerns you may contact anyone in the front office or Academy Coordinator Amanda Goldman ([email protected]).

Thanks

Here is a copy of the May Updates email sent out on Saturday, April 29th.

Dear Leading Edge Families

Last week was our Street Fair open house.  We raised funds that will allow LEAP to continue supporting teacher and classrooms needs and celebrated Leading Edge Learning.  Thank you so much to all who attended, contributed, and made the event such a success.  With just a few weeks left in the school year, the staff and I were so happy to be able to celebrate this year of Leading Edge learning with you.

Here are your May Updates.

Testing and Portfolio Week Schedules

Next week Leading Edge students will be undergoing state CAASPP testing.  Testing will take place in the mornings Tuesday-Friday, May 2nd-5th, with classes resuming in the afternoons.  It is important that students arrive at school on time, rested, and breakfasted.  If at all possible, please do not have your student out of school during testing hours as any missed tests have to be made-up, causing a student to miss additional class time.  Class schedules will be slightly adjusted over this week and the following to all all periods to meet equally.  The schedule is attached below.

Portfolios

We are still looking for judges and community members to help with 8th grade portfolios.  This is an excellent opportunity for parents of younger students to develop an understanding of the portfolio process.  It is also a fantastic chance to invite extended family, friends, and colleagues to help out our Leading Edge community.  Portfolio judges can sign up for as many panels as they are able to attend, but we ask for a minimum of two.  Please consider signing up as judge at the sign-up genius link below or sharing this opportunity with other community members.  Parents of 8th grade students are asked not to sign up.

End of Year Schedule

  • Finals Week is June 5-9th.  On Monday June 5th, Tuesday June 6th, and Wednesday June 7th students will have final exams.  They will be dismissed by 1pm.  On Thursday June 8th, students will be attending end of the year field trips.  On Friday June 9th, 6th and 7th graders will not have classes.  8th grade promotion will take place on June 9th at 10:30am.

Parent Hours

  • As we approach the end of the year, please turn in any outstanding parent hour forms.  I will be happy to sign off on items or events that took place earlier in the year if it will help us document the great support we get from parents.  This year we have been so thrilled to see you at events, receive your donations, and generally partner with you as a member of the Leading Edge community.

Registration and Intent to Disenroll

  • On April 28th, we sent out an important email about next year, asking that you provide us the information as to your intent to return to Leading Edge, Transfer/Promote, or Disenroll.  Please keep a close eye on this and related communications as they are critical to our ability to build our schedule and move along our waitlist.  Thank you for your help on this.

Traffic and Drop-off and Pick-Up

Keep on the look out for a communication from the school updating some traffic norms during pick-up and drop-off times.  As always, please be extra vigilant and cautious at these times of heavy traffic congestion.
