So many families email and ask about school supplies and donations.  To help you out over the summer, we have compiled a list with all of that information for the start of the year in one place.  Please be aware that all school supplies indicated are suggested or recommended.  Donations are very helpful to keep our program flourishing.  None of these items are mandatory.

Hello Leading Edge Families,

Each of the Academies at Natomas Charter School is proud of our opportunity to serve our students through offering world class learning environments.  Our ongoing goal is to nurture young minds and effectively prepare our students for the future.  Each year we ask NCS families for their response to a survey that allows us to continue to improve as a school and as individual academies.

Please follow the link below to take the Year-End Survey:

We ask that you have one member of your family complete this survey by June 7th, 2017.  Once you complete the survey, you can print the final page and turn it in with a parent hour form to earn 1 additional hour toward your family total.

Your feedback is a critical component of continuing to improve our program.  Thank you in advance for your time in completing this survey.

Dear Incoming 6th-grade families

At the math placement tests, students were given a packet with summer work.  While summer work is optional, it is highly encouraged as a way to reduce a loss of skills and content.  We have done our best to create assignments that are fun and engaging, as well as providing choice for students and families.  These assignments are the same for PFAA and LE and can be done without access to NCS tech accounts.

If your student misplaced the hard copies, links to the documents are available here:

SUMMER MATH

SUMMER READING

Also in the packet was a Save-the-Date for Orientation

6th-grade parent and student orientation will be held  Tuesday, August 8th, 12:30-3:30.

Thank you!

Here is a copy of the May Updates email sent out on Saturday, April 29th.

Dear Leading Edge Families

Last week was our Street Fair open house.  We raised funds that will allow LEAP to continue supporting teacher and classrooms needs and celebrated Leading Edge Learning.  Thank you so much to all who attended, contributed, and made the event such a success.  With just a few weeks left in the school year, the staff and I were so happy to be able to celebrate this year of Leading Edge learning with you.

Here are your May Updates.

Testing and Portfolio Week Schedules

Next week Leading Edge students will be undergoing state CAASPP testing.  Testing will take place in the mornings Tuesday-Friday, May 2nd-5th, with classes resuming in the afternoons.  It is important that students arrive at school on time, rested, and breakfasted.  If at all possible, please do not have your student out of school during testing hours as any missed tests have to be made-up, causing a student to miss additional class time.  Class schedules will be slightly adjusted over this week and the following to all all periods to meet equally.  The schedule is attached below.

Portfolios

We are still looking for judges and community members to help with 8th grade portfolios.  This is an excellent opportunity for parents of younger students to develop an understanding of the portfolio process.  It is also a fantastic chance to invite extended family, friends, and colleagues to help out our Leading Edge community.  Portfolio judges can sign up for as many panels as they are able to attend, but we ask for a minimum of two.  Please consider signing up as judge at the sign-up genius link below or sharing this opportunity with other community members.  Parents of 8th grade students are asked not to sign up.

Sign up HERE -  http://www.signupgenius.com/go/20f0b45a9aa22a1fc1-portfolio1

End of Year Schedule

  • Finals Week is June 5-9th.  On Monday June 5th, Tuesday June 6th, and Wednesday June 7th students will have final exams.  They will be dismissed by 1pm.  On Thursday June 8th, students will be attending end of the year field trips.  On Friday June 9th, 6th and 7th graders will not have classes.  8th grade promotion will take place on June 9th at 10:30am.

Parent Hours

  • As we approach the end of the year, please turn in any outstanding parent hour forms.  I will be happy to sign off on items or events that took place earlier in the year if it will help us document the great support we get from parents.  This year we have been so thrilled to see you at events, receive your donations, and generally partner with you as a member of the Leading Edge community.

Registration and Intent to Disenroll

  • On April 28th, we sent out an important email about next year, asking that you provide us the information as to your intent to return to Leading Edge, Transfer/Promote, or Disenroll.  Please keep a close eye on this and related communications as they are critical to our ability to build our schedule and move along our waitlist.  Thank you for your help on this.

Traffic and Drop-off and Pick-Up

Keep on the look out for a communication from the school updating some traffic norms during pick-up and drop-off times.  As always, please be extra vigilant and cautious at these times of heavy traffic congestion.

This is a copy of the email that was sent Friday, April 28th to all currently enrolled LE families highlighting the registration and intent to disenroll process for 2017-18

Dear Leading Edge Families

We are so excited to begin preparations for the 2017-18 school year.  This email includes details about information critical to that process

If you are returning to Leading Edge next year....

1. Registration

We are excited to announce online Registration for the upcoming school year! This process replaces the paper forms sent home at the beginning of each school year.  On Monday, May 15th, you will receive an email from “[email protected]”  This will contain the links and instructions for completing your student’s registration.   (Don’t worry, we will send out a reminder closer to the date.)

Your registration must be completed and submitted by Sunday, May 28th, at 8 p.m.  If you require assistance completing the forms, you may visit the office during normal business hours or contact Ms Goldman to arrange another time.  If you have students in multiple programs, please note that the time line for this process is different from PFAA or VLA.

If you are leaving Natomas Charter School or transferring to another academy…

1. Intent to Disenroll

While we hope that all of our students will continue with us through all of middle school, we know that sometimes life takes you in a different direction.  If your life is taking you away from Natomas Charter School or Leading Edge for the 2017-18 school year, we’d like to know.  Please let us know by completing THIS quick google form.  Completing this form will NOT disenroll you or give away your place for next year.  It will allow us to contact you for additional information.  Any students who are leaving Natomas Charter School OR transferring/promoting to a different academy, including all 8th graders, should complete this form.

As always, if you have any questions or concerns you may contact anyone in the front office or Academy Coordinator Amanda Goldman ([email protected]).

Thanks

Dear Leading Edge Families

Every year, 8th graders participate in the culminating learning experience of 8th grade portfolios.  Over the course of two days, students present the portfolios that they have been building over the course of 3-years of middle school to a panel of teachers and community members.  This process is designed to allow students to demonstrate how they have grown in their understanding of the Leading Edge pillars through their time in middle school.

This year, portfolio panels will be held on the afternoons of Thursday, May 11th and Friday, May 12th.  These will be minimum days.  Classes will end at 11:15.  Students will be allowed to remain on campus for lunch, but must be off campus by 11:45.  Only 8th graders who are presenting their portfolios should remain on campus for the afternoon.  Each 8th grader will be assigned a time slot on either Thursday or Friday, between 11:50 and 2:15.

To make this process more significant and authentic for our 8th grade students, we recruit community members to sit on panels as judges.

This email went out to families on February 21, but is included here for your reference

Hello Leading Edge Families

Hope all had a lovely time over the long weekend.  We are happy to have your students back at school.  It’s not quite March yet, but there were a few things that couldn’t wait.  So I am sending out our March updates a little early.

Enrollment / Lottery for 2017-18

Last reminder that applications for the 2017-18 school year must be turned in by Friday, February 24th at 4pm, with no exceptions.  For those of you continuing at Leading Edge, you do not need to submit another application.  However, if you have family members or friends hoping to attend a Natomas Charter School academy next year, they must have an application turned in.  This also applies to Leading Edge 8th grade students who are hoping to attend PFAA for high school.  The public lottery for spots at Leading Edge in the 2017-18 will be held on March 20th at 4p.m.

LEAP Family Learning Night

Our next LEAP family learning night is Thursday, March 2nd at 7:00p.m.  Our topic will be “Understanding your middle schooler” and counselor Melinda Curtis will be facilitating.  To help us prepare for this evening, please consider submitted your questions about raising a middle-schooler through THIS google survey or at this link https://goo.gl/forms/ZFN01AUk5U43Tysn2

End of Trimester 2 / Report Cards

We are almost two thirds of the way through the school year.  Second trimester ends on March 3rd.  We hope to have report cards in your mailboxes by March 10th.  Starting a new trimester with a clean gradebook is a great time to talk to your students about adjusting their academic behaviors.  If you are struggling to keep on top of Schoology and grades with your student, please contact Amanda Goldman ([email protected]) for suggestions.

Parent Hours

Please help us reach our goal of 100% parent involvement this year.  We hope to see you at events, we hope that you will help us fill donation requests, AND we hope that you will remember to log your hours.  Parent hour forms can be found in the main office and on our website.

Minimum and No School Days

Friday, March 3rd is a minimum day.  Dismissal is at 11:15.  Lunch is available until 11:45.  Students must be off campus by 11:45.  There is no study hall available that day.

Monday, March 13th is a professional development day for all Natomas Charter School.  There is no school that day

As always, please contact academy coordinator, Amanda Goldman ([email protected]) or academy assistant Linda Mattsson-Boze ([email protected]) if you have any questions.

Best

Amanda

Happy (almost) November Leading Edge Families

With November and December, we embark on a busy time of year for many families.  At Leading Edge, we know that this time is often incredibly exciting while also being challenging for our middle schoolers.  As the first trimester draws to a close, we hope that these updates will help you and your family stay current on all the goings-on so to best support everyone during this busy time.

LEAP Family Learning -  High School Night

LEAP sponsored High School Preview night will be Thursday, November 3rd, 6:30-8p.m.  This is an important event for 8th grade families in particular, but also may be relevant for families of younger students.  Representatives from many area high schools and programs will be present for information and questions.  The format will be similar to last year with each program having 2-3 minutes to present at the start of the evening, followed by time for participants to move around and ask questions in the second part.  We strongly encourage families with questions about high school or high school admissions to attend this event.

All 6th grade students have a student-led conference with their parent/guardian and their core teacher.  Core teachers will be contacting parents to schedule those.  The 7th/8th grade team uses this time to prioritize conferences for struggling students.  Teachers will be reaching out to specific families to schedule these.  Once they have scheduled those meetings, they will be open to requests for additional meetings.  Thank you for understanding.

Trimester 1 Ends November 18th

November 18th is the last day of the first trimester.  With the November break, we will be mailing report cards home no later than December 5th.  Please check your mail box.  All students should receive report cards.

October Updates

Happy (almost) October Leading Edge Families

It was fantastic to see so many of you at last month’s Back to School Night.  Some production classes had almost 100% of their families represented!  Lets aim to keep up that level of attendance at all of our events this year!  As a school, we appreciate your time commitment to  being part of the learning that takes place at Leading Edge.  A few things to keep on your radar for the month of October…

Progress Reports

We are about halfway through the first trimester.  While we hope that you are using Schoology to keep aware of your student’s grade throughout the term, we have the practice of sending home progress reports for any students currently earning a 1 or 2 in their courses at this halfway point.  We expect to mail those home no later than October 12th.  Please note that only students with 1s or 2s in their courses will receive progress reports.  If you do not receive one, you can assume that your student is earning passing grades in all of their classes.

If you notice that your student is earning a 1 or a 2 in any of their classes, looking Schoology is a great first step in understanding why.  If they are struggling in just one or two classes, we strongly encourage you to get in touch with that specific teacher.  If you notice that they are not earning passing grades in multiple classes, we encourage you to get in touch with your student’s production (first period) teacher.

LEAP Family Learning Nights - October is Tech Savvy

Our first LEAP sponsored family learning night is coming up on Thursday, October 13th, from 7-8 p.m.  These nights are designed to bring families together to better understand and celebrate the learning that is happening here at Leading Edge.  The theme for October is Tech Savvy for families.  Teachers Trisha Sanchez and Jenell Novello will be joined by Joe Wood, Director of Instructional Technology, to present an evening centered around supporting families with technology.  We will make sure you can successfully navigate and access Schoology as and familiarize you with some of the tech tools students are using every day at school.  LEAP provides some light refreshments and families earn parent hours for attending.  Hope to see you there.

Spirit Week is October 24th - 28th

Leading Edge student leadership will be putting on their first spirit week of the year from October 24th through 28th.  The week will kick off with a Monday afternoon rally and continue with daily dress themes, production competitions, and more.  Keep an eye on the daily bulletin for more details.

October 28th is a Minimum Day

Friday, October 28th is a minimum day.  Minimum days are placed strategically throughout the year to allow our teachers to do the work required to create innovative and dynamic learning experiences for your students.  On minimum days, students are dismissed at 11:15.  Lunch service is available until 11:45.  All students must be off campus by 11:45.  There is no study hall or media center supervision available.  Thank you for your support.

Save the Date for High School Night

LEAP sponsored High School Preview night will be Thursday, November 3rd, 6:30-8p.m.  This is an important event for 8th grade families in particular, but also may be relevant for families of younger students.  Representatives from many area high schools and programs will be present for information and questions.

Hi Families - if you suddenly checked Schoology today and your child's grades had disappeared, please do not panic.  We had to adjust a setting in the back-end of Schoology and it will take teachers a day or two to make the adjustments on their end.  Please check back next week and the grades will be back.

Thank you for your patience.

Dear LE Families,

Welcome to the 2016-17 School Year! We’re ready to kick off another great year at LE and your involvement is a HUGE part of making the year successful.

LEAP has been working hard to simplify how you access your online parent hours.

NEW THIS YEAR … Each family (new and returning) has been pre-enrolled in our volunteer management system.
All you have to do is set up your password.

Step 1 - Each family should click this link to log in for the first time:http://le.volunteerbuilder.com/

Step 2 - Please enter your email address (the address this email came to), click “forgot my password” and you will be given a temporary password.

Step 3 – Log back in using the temporary password and you can then customize your password, view/edit your profile, and view events for the year.

A good place to start is by clicking on the 'Profile' button and making sure your interests and student information has been added and is correct. With this information, LEAP will be able to provide your family with important interest specific and grade specific information.

If you have any questions, please contact Linda Mattsson-Boze,[email protected], for help.

We’re so happy you’re part of the LEAP family!

Please see the communication below that was sent on 5/16/16 about end of year updates.

Dear Leading Edge Families

We are well in to May and the end of the school year is fast approaching.  In this email, please find all the pertinent information to guide us in to June.  As usual, there is a lot here, so please read all the way through.

Open House Thank You

Thank you so much to all the families who attended our newly conceived “Street-Fair Style” open house.  We had over 200 families come to learn and celebrate learning with your students.  Through the fantastic raffle baskets, LEAP was able to raise funds to support our community needs.  The staff and I appreciate your enthusiasm for events of this kind.  Lets look forward to more in 2016-17.

Intent to Return - 6th and 7th grade Families

Please help us in getting accurate information about next school year by completing this quick google form.  Follow this link or go to this address (http://goo.gl/forms/QHOwXn6qaz5k0vpE2).  Please complete this for each student you have in 6th or 7th grade as soon as possible.

Parent Surveys

Over 130 families have already completed the parent feedback survey for this school year (putting us in the lead of all the NCS academies).  This survey provides us valuable information that guides the development of our program and priorities.  If you haven’t already, please take 10 minutes to complete the survey by Friday 5/20.  You can access the survey here or at this address (https://www.surveymonkey.com/r/NCS_Parent_Survey2016)

Parent Hours

This year we set an academy goal of 2400 total hours and 100% family participation.  I am happy to say that the Leading Edge Community truly came together and embraced this goal.  We currently have over 4000 hours of parent involvement logged with close to 95% family participation.  However, the year is not over!  Please keep an eye on your email for opportunities to help with end of the year items for the dance, promotion, and classroom clean up help).  I will be reaching out to families who have not yet logged their hours to help us reach our 100% participation goal.

End of Year Schedule

Last but not least, please see the attached schedule (also linked here) for the week of June 6th through 10th.  This last week of school consists of a significantly modified schedule to accommodate finals, promotion, and other celebratory events.  Please also note the details at the bottom to ensure that you are fully informed about these June events.  8th grade families will be receiving an additional email with details pertinent to 8th graders and promotion.

Thank you for a great year and for reading all the way to through this lengthy email.  As always, please direct questions to Linda Mattsson-Boze ([email protected]) or Amanda Goldman ([email protected]).  If we don’t see you before the end of the school year, we look forward to the first day of school, August 24th 2016.  Keep an eye on your email over the summer for additional communication related to the start of the school year.

Best

Hello Leading Edge Families,

Each of the Academies at Natomas Charter School is proud of our opportunity to serve our students through offering world class learning environments.  Our ongoing goal is to nurture young minds and effectively prepare our students for the future.  Each year we ask NCS families for their response to a survey that allows us to continue to improve as a school and as individual academies.

Please follow the link below to take the Year-End Survey:

https://www.surveymonkey.com/r/NCS_Parent_Survey2016

We ask that you have one member of your family complete this survey by May 10th, 2016.  Once you complete the survey, you can print the final page and turn it in with a parent hour form to earn 1 additional hour toward your family total.  We will also be collecting them at Open House on May 4th if you would prefer to turn them in there.

Your feedback is a critical component of continuing to improve our program.  Thank you in advance for your time in completing this survey.

Dear Families - In case you missed it, below is the text of a communication that went home via email on March 18th.

Dear Leading Edge Families

The Leading Edge faculty and staff want to wish you a wonderful and restful spring break.  Starting tomorrow (Saturday, March 19th), the school will be closed through April 3rd.  We look forward to seeing you back Monday morning, April 4th.  Please note that during this time the main office will be closed.  Teachers and staff will not have access to voice mail and may only be checking email sporadically.

I want to take this time to update you on other happenings over the next 6 weeks.  Thank for taking the time to read through this email.

Math Updates for 2016-17

We are excited to announce some updates to our math program for the 2016-17 school year.  Attached you will find a letter reviewing these changes.  The letter will also be posted on our website.  I will also be speaking about this at the April LEAP meeting.  I look forward to sharing more information with you at that time.

April LEAP meeting

Our next LEAP meeting will be Wednesday April 6th, 7pm-8pm in the MPR.  At this meeting, our social-emotional counselor Melinda Curtis will be speaking about how to manage student screen time in a tech heavy world.  I will be speaking about updates to our math program.  Lots of good information to be shared that night.  We hope to see you there.

Testing Week, Portfolios, and Minimum Days

Please note that all Leading Edge students will be engaged in state testing April 19-22, with 8th graders continuing to test on Monday, April 25.  Testing will take place in the mornings.  Thursday April 21 and Friday April 22 will be minimum days as we complete 8th grade portfolio panels.  Students will be dismissed following testing at 11am.  8th graders will be scheduled to present their portfolios either Thursday or Friday between 11:30-2:30.  On the day of their presentation, they will stay on campus until they are finished presenting.  They should plan to head home after dismissal on the day they are not presenting.

Also, please note that portfolio present a great opportunity for 6th and 7th grade parents to get a preview of the process their students will go through in upcoming years.  We are seeking parents to sit as community members on the 8th grade portfolio panels.  If you are interested, please sign up here (www.SignUpGenius.com/go/20F0B45A9AA22A1FC1-8thgrade )

Street Fair (aka Open House)

Lastly, save the date for Leading Edge Street Fair (formerly knows as Open House) on Wednesday, May 4th, 5:30-7.  We are planning for an interactive evening of showcasing all that we have done in the 2015-16 School Year.  In addition to a chance to see student work from all classes, there will be food, games, and raffle items.  It should be a fun night for the whole family.

Again, we at Leading Edge hope you have a happy and restful break.

See you in April!

Please note that this is a slightly adjusted calendar to accommodate construction projects happening at multiple NCS campuses.  We anticipate a return to our more "normal" schedule in the following year.

Hi Leading Edge Families

Wow - December already.  Not quite sure how that happened.

I wanted to check in with the goings on for December and early January.  It seems like this time of year there is so much to keep track of so I like to try to get it into one place for you.  Here goes...

  1. Art Exhibits on display.  From now through December 17th, the 7th grade tape-mural pieces will be up in the LE hallway.  These are very cool works of 2D perspective produced entirely using painters tape.  Directly following break, the Literature in Art exhibit will be up in the MPR gallery.  Stop in and see our students’ amazing work.
  2. Enrollment season has come.  As current NCS families, you are our best publicity.  All application information has been updated on our LE webpage (http://le.natomascharter.org/applicationinfo) and the main NCS webpage (http://www.natomascharter.org/geninfo).  Please share this information with friends and family who might be interested in joining the NCS family
  3. The Big Day of Reading is happening on January 4th - the first day back from break.  Kids can come to school in their PJs and will be doing a whole host of reading related activities.  Thanks to LEAP for sponsoring some amazing prizes to go with the day.  Help us out with some treats and other things by following the sign up genius link that was sent out earlier this week (or right here http://www.signupgenius.com/go/20f0b45a9aa22a1fc1-dayofreading)
  4. Please please please sign up for Remind!  It makes me so sad when folks tell me that they don’t know what is going on at school.  If you are reading this email, you have at least 1 line of communication open with us.  The next best option is to join our Remind Text Message group.  This enables me to send you text message updated with important events and reminders.  To join, text the message “@lefam” to the number 81010

Best wishes for the season and the new year.

Dear Leading Edge 7th and 8th Grade Families

I am so excited to announce our overnight field trips for 2015-16.  We aim for these trips to be both pivotal learning experiences closely tied to our curriculum and important developmental experiences for our students.  This year we are so pleased to be partnering with long time friend of NCS, Lisa Landry and her company Seize the Day College Tours (http://www.seizethedaytours.com/) to make the trips run smoothly for both teachers and students.  Teachers will be sharing information about the trips with students very soon, but we wanted to give parents a sneak peak.

The 8th grade class will be visiting the Oregon Shakespeare Festival in Ashland, Oregon.  The plays they see and workshops they take will tie closely with work in Language Arts and Expressions.  They will also be touring the campus and getting a taste of college dorm life.  This trip will take place March 2nd-4th.  For more information on cost, itinerary, and other details, please see the attached flyer.

The 7th grade class will be heading off to San Francisco.  Their trip will include time at the Cal Academy of Sciences and the Museum of African Diaspora to complement Social Studies and Science curricula.  They will also take a tour of a college campus.  This trip will take place February 17th and 18th.  For more information on cost, itinerary, and other details, please see the attached flyer.

We are committed to the goal that every student who wishes to participate in these trips is able to.  While we strive to keep costs as low as possible, there is a per student cost associated with these trips.  If that cost represents a significant challenge for your family, please complete the this form (http://goo.gl/forms/cPnyt9yI1P) by December 4th.  All responses will be kept confidential and seen only by the Academy Coordinator.

We will need parent chaperones for these trips (especially male chaperones!).  If you are interested in chaperoning, please complete and submit this chaperone application (http://goo.gl/forms/6duUnZGJVG) by January 1st.

We hope you are as excited as we are to continue to be able to offer these experiences for our students.

Best

Upcoming Events - 7th graders are headed to the California museum on November 3rd, 8th graders are headed to the Capitol on November 12th, and 6th graders will be putting on their Mummy’s Tomb performance on November 13th.  We are so excited about all of these great events.

This is the communication that was sent out Thursday morning, 9/3

Dear Leading Edge Families

September has arrived and with it hopefully the ease into more routine for the school year.  Here at school, learning is in full swing and students seem to be thriving.  I wanted to take this moment to update you on a few upcoming matters.

Schoology Parent Accounts - We will be rolling out Schoology Parent accounts in the next week.  You should receive a letter in the mail with an access code that will enable you to create a Schoology account that follows your student(s) in all of their classes.  Multiple parents can create accounts following a single student so families with multiple households can create separate accounts.  Through those accounts you will be able to check grades, see their calendar, and know what assignments they have.  With the letter there will also be a link to a screencast that walks you through the basic navigation of the site.

First LEAP Meeting - Our first LEAP (Leading Edge Active Parents) Meeting will be Wednesday, September 16th from 7-8p.m.  We postponed this meeting as to align with the roll out of your Schoology codes because that will be our focus.  Our guest will be Director of Instructional Technology, Joe Wood.  He will be teaching us how to make the best use of this new and exciting tool.  Feel free to bring your students as they are among our best teachers on this topic.

Rally and Awards - This year, Leading Edge will be having Friday rallies twice a trimester.  The goal of these is to celebrate accomplishments and build school spirit.  Our first rally will be tomorrow, Friday, September 4th from 2:15-2:45.  Parents are welcome to join us, but should note that these events are really designed for our students.  Last year’s trimester three honor roll names will be read but no individual awards will be given out.  Certificates will be available on our home page so that you can print them out at home.

September is Attendance Awareness Month - Really, every month is important for kids to be in school and here at Leading Edge, they are.    When students are out of class, it can deeply impact their learning.  Help us keep our attendance numbers high by continuing to avoid unnecessary absences and tardies.

Thank you for your attention through all of these updates.  For more frequent glimpses in to what is going on at school, please follow us on Twitter @NCS_LE, on Facebook, or sign up for remind text messages (text “@lefam” to 81010).  Looking forward to seeing everyone at the LEAP meeting.

This year we are working to enhance the home - school connection with more robust use of Schoology and a new version of PowerSchool.  This new instance of PowerSchool will sync more seamlessly with Schoology and allow us more flexibility in communication with families.  This will also allow parents to use Schoology as the primary place to check grades, the place to go to see student's upcoming assignments, and the place to help parents be more connected to what is happening in classes.

We are very excited about these changes and are taking steps to ensure that both systems are working well for teachers and students before rolling them out to parents.  For now, parents can access information about your student's progress by logging in to Schoology with them using their student account.  Here is a link to a great screencast that will demonstrate what you can see from the student home page.  Please expect information about parent Schoology and PowerSchool accounts to be coming your way mid-September.

Thank you so much for you patience as we make this important updates.

While we never want to see students leave us, we understand that circumstances can sometimes necessitate a move to a different school.  When that happens we want to make ensure a smooth transition for anyone who might be leaving or joining our community.  We can best accomplish that goal with early information about individual's plans.

If you know that your 6th or 7th grade student will not be returning for the 2015-16 school year,  please follow this link to complete the google form or copy and paste this link (http://goo.gl/forms/9hNQUfWDZR).   Please contact Amanda Goldman ([email protected]) or Linda Mattsson-Boze ([email protected]) if you have any questions.

Hello Leading Edge Families.

In efforts to ensure that all of our families have the information and opportunity they need to be fully engaged with our school community, I ask that you take a few minutes to complete the survey linked below.

This survey is completely optional, but I hope that you will choose to provide your feedback in this way.  You can receive one parent hour per family for completing this survey if you choose to provide the identification information at the end.

Click HERE to take the survey.

Thanks

If you didn't get the email, here is the message we just sent home about portfolios and keeping 8th graders on track for success.

Dear 8th grade parents

Spring break has almost arrived.  We hope you have an excellent 2 weeks with your students and that they get the rest and rejuvenation they need to finish their last year strong.

With 8th grade winding down, portfolio time is almost upon us.  Students will be presenting their portfolios on May 14th and 15th.  They have been working hard in class to hone their ePortfolios.  They have been writing and revising their cover letters.  They have begun the first of many rounds of practice interviews.

We have checked in with students and believe most to be on track for success in this culminating project.  Even so, here are a few things you can be watching for over the next month that will help them stay on that track to portfolio success.

  • Look at your student’s ePortfolio.  Look for professional layout and help them edit for typos and grammar.
  • Students should have evidence of their best work samples embedded in their ePortfolios.
  • Students have already written draft responses to their interview questions.  Many could benefit from help refining those answers to greater depth and reflectiveness

You should be able to access information about your student's ePortfolio and see their written responses to interview questions through their Technology class on Schoology.  ThePortfolio Handbook can be found on our website.

Best

Amanda Goldman, Academy Coordinator

Natomas Charter School is in the process of reconvening the Technology Task Force for the 2013-2014 school year.  This group of parents, students, teachers, and administrators guides the course of technology integration for all five academies through the development and implementation of a school-wide technology plan.

Last year theTechnology Task Force finalized our board-adopted and state-approved three-year technology plan.  This year the group will focus on implementing the plan through the creation of four different committees.

Multimedia Festival - Plans the school's first-annual student multimedia festival
Student Technology Skills - Develops a matrix of student technology skills and digital citizenship lessons for each grade level
Tech Tools Website - Identifies and contributes content to the NCS Tech Tools Website
Fundraising - Focused on raising funds to purchase additional student devices and peripheral hardware (cameras, microphones, etc.)

The Technology Task Force will meet on the following dates from 4:30-6:00pm in the Library Media Center on the main campus. Each of the meetings will be an opportunity for the committees to work on their projects.  You will receive 9+ hours for being a Tech Task Force member.
