Current Event Guidelines

What's going on around the world right now? Where are Iraq, Mexico, and North Korea? To be an educated person, you need to know! This year you will be required to present one current event to the class. Your current event presentation must be based on an article found in the newspaper or newsmagazine. Reputable Internet news sources, such as cnn.com and msnbc.com, are ok. Since we are studying world history this year, your news story must be on an event that happened outside of the U.S.

Your current event poster must include the following parts:

  • Original Article : Must be recent (within a month of presentation).
  • Summary of Article : Should be about a half page, in your own words, summarizing the main points (who, what, when, where, why, and how).
  • Country Fact Report : Should include the basics such as population, size, economy, government, major religions, and other information you can find in an encyclopedia or book.
  • Map of Country : Should be hand drawn--the more detailed and neatly colored, the better!
  • Flag of Country : Should be neatly hand drawn and in full color! Try to find out what the colors and symbols mean, if possible!
  • Work Cited : Must be in the correct format (see at bottom).
  • Presentation Cards : Your notes for your speech must be written out on index cards to help you remember what to say.

For full presentation points : Your report should be on a standard poster board 22” X 28” (no foam boards, please). All text should be typed or neatly handwritten in black ink with no spelling/grammar errors. Your poster should be neat, attractively laid out, and have a large title stating the country/event. Practice your speech on your article and country before giving it to the class! It should be spoken clearly and last about 3-5 minutes. Be ready to take questions at the end. Don't forget creativity and neatness are always appreciated!
