High School Transition Support (Email #1)
Posted 10/21/19

Dear 8th-graders and 8th-grade families

This is the first of a series of emails you will get from me over the next few months as we help prepare you to transition to high school.  We at Leading Edge will do our best to support you in the process of applying and choosing a high school.  However, please note that we are able to manage this process on an individual student level.  Keeping your eyes out for these emails and follow up on suggested action items quickly is your best way to ensure that you are on track.

High School Options Night
High School Options Night is Tuesday, November 12 at 6:00 p.m.  The evening will begin in the Benvenuti Theater with the NCS college counselors (and me) talking about what to look for in a high school.  This will be followed by an hour in the MPR where many area high schools will be represented.  Students and families will have a chance to speak with and ask questions of the school representatives.  8th-grade families are strongly encouraged to attend this event.  Thank you LEAP for sponsoring this event.

Inderkum High School Shadow Days
As historically more than ½ of our Leading Edgers matriculate to Inderkum High School, we are able to organize visits to CECA and IB.  This allows for a smooth the process and limits the impact of many students being absent from class.  We will be organizing 2 shadow days at Inderkum.  These dates are not yet set, but will be soon.

Please note, these are NOT school field trips.  Parents will be responsible for transporting students to and from Inderkum.  Inderkum shadow day are limited to 1 visit per student and max out at 30 students.  There will be a google form sent out for families to complete their visiting day preferences.

High School Shadow Days Attendance / Assignments

Leading Edge will help to organize shadow days at PFAA, VLA, and IB/CECA programs at Inderkum High School.  All other visiting or shadow days must be arranged directly with the school.  We ask that students who will be absent from school to visit a high school program COMPLETE THIS FORM to reflect on their experiences and account for their absence.

Transcripts and Reports
Many schools request packets of information on students, including transcripts and test scores.  Our office staff will be mailing home a copy of this information for all 8th graders with report cards in mid-November.  Please keep track of this original and use it to make copies for your various applications.  Assembling this information is high labor intensive for our staff.  If you do lose these originals, please be patient when you contact the office for a replacement.

Natomas Charter High Schools
Leading Edge is just one step in the Natomas Charter School journey.  We hope that students will consider staying in the family and attending PFAA of VLA high school programs.  Please remember that students will need to apply to Natomas Charter High Schools and will need to audition for PFAA.  Applications will be available on December 2nd and will be due by January 31st..  We will support students in preparing their PFAA audition and attending PFAA and VLA Preview (visiting) days if they choose.
